God Complex (2023)
A church designed within a fort masterplan which shifts Wellington City onto the hilltop of Tangi-te-keo, Matairangi (Mt Victoria).
The building itself materially disappears into the sky.
From rammed earth, to translucent polycarbonate, to a timber structure, the building uses the idea of 'God in the sky above' as a means to symbolize itself as a place where God connects with us as earthly humans.
The rammed earth surrounds the human level of the interior, while the translucent polycarbonate diffuses light which reaches down into the darker lower space.
The Japanese Chidori joint is used to create the sculptural structure which sits both above and below the roof.
A timber structure using CLT Slabs, Glulam Columns and LVL Beams to create moment connections that are earthquake resistant.
A series of sketches showing the conceptual development to a parti.
Plan arrangement considered public to private space and ease of access constrained within the tight site boundary.
Sketches exploring site context and plan bubbling.
